Abstract

Allah has created human beings in the best and perfect of shape. The balance in which human body is created is referred to as a blessing and sign of the creativity of the Almighty. It has also been commanded that human body is a trust (AmÉnah) and therefore it should be preserved and every care should be taken to protect it from all harms. As the body is an AmÉnah, one can use it only in those actions which are permissible in SharÊ´ah. Similarly, no modification in human body is permissible except those allowed by Islam and one cannot change it according to his personal choice. Recently, a trend of plastic surgery has emerged whereby such surgery is extensively used for various purposes and even Muslims are utilizing such techniques. However, it is noteworthy there are two types of surgery which include reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery and there is a difference in the SharÊ´ah ruling of each of these types. This research paper discusses the SharÊ´ah position of plastic surgery. Our findings suggest that when surgery is needed for preservation and/or proper functioning of the human body and it is performed via the right process by utilizing the right material, it should be permissible. However, if such surgery is undertaken for mere beautification or making one’s self attractive, it will be prohibited from SharÊ´ah perspective.
