Umar bin Abdul Aziz: Distinctions of his Era and Quality Selection of Governance Team

Abstract

The Holly Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) said that Allah will continue sending men from Mulim Ummah in every century who will strive for the revival of Islam. This duty of revival and reform in Jews and Christians was to be assigned to the Prophets. This noble mission has now been assigned to truly guided followers of Holy Prophets Muhammad (Peace be upon Him).

In the history of Islamic Caliphate, Umar bin Abdul Aziz is considered fifth best Muslim ruler in Islamic Caliphate. His governance strategy always preferred Justice, Honesty and piety.

Looking from the above context, His Caliphate has many positive features from different aspects; one of these aspects is the Governance team, and its best role that left everlasting imprints in Muslim history. He not only chose the Governing body on true principles of merit in addition to constantly keeping a proper check and balance system.

The theory ‘quality governance’ in recent times is widely debated around the world. There seems a consensus that good governance has vital role in the human progress and development of society. For us, as Muslims, this is inevitable to seek guidance through exemplary icons of Muslim history.

While keeping distinguished features of his Caliphate in mind, this humble study reiterates that he has always been considered a good model for the people of all times and is being studied from different angles. In addition to his personal piety and sound character; Umar bin Abdul Aziz reinforced constant vigilance in the selection and progress of his team setting higher standards of outstanding honesty in a very short span of time. Thus it can be argued that by adapting standards of his unique era; we can lay down the foundations of modern democratic and welfare Islamic state.
